Cricket lowered his knife, grinning. He turned toward the creek again, wanting to finally get to hunting. He wasn't really paying attention to what Jasmine was saying, but he sort of got the idea that she was still making fun of him for what he did earlier. "Come on- I was just curious!" He said chuckling.
"Okay, so fishing.." Cricket murmured, crouching down by the water. "First thing ya gotta know is to never let the fish know you're there. So you gotta sit in a way that your shadow doesn't fall over the water."

jasmine smiled and pushed her hair behind her shoulders. "curious or not, i'm not gonna let that go for quite a bit of time," she said mischievously. she followed him to the edge of the creek and watched as he crouched down slowly, but carefully, as if making sure every bit of his moves was precise. of course, in hunting, it always should be. she copied him cautiously, wanting to show him that she could do this correctly. how embarrassing would it be to just mess up right away? of course, that was how jasmine was at times--always messing things up for herself at the first moment. but now was her chance to fix that one flaw up. so she made like he did and measured her movements exactly, watching for her shadow on the water.

Cricket remained silent for a couple seconds, not knowing what to say next. He narrowed his eyes, just like he did earlier when he was fishing. But that wasn't really fishing; he just got lucky with catching a fish with his hands.
"Okay," He said, speaking quietly. "Now you gotta focus on just one fish- one that doesn't swim around very much." He spotted a medium-sized one lurking toward the top of the water, watching them with its beady little eyes. "There, that one's good." He said. Hopefully Jasmine knew which one he was talking about. He waited for her response before moving on.

there was another moment of silence after jasmine had crouched down next to him, and she bit her lip at this. was she doing something wrong, or was he just naturally silent? well, of course he had to be silent--they were hunting. but she was just uncomfortable with silence at times. then again, she'd had to get used to it if she wanted to learn how to hunt properly. so this silence was right, in a way, even if it didn't seem so to her.
cricket designated a fish to her, and immediately, her brown eyes darted around the clear water, seeking out the one that he had in mind. finally, she found the only one who wasn't swimming around, the one with just a thin barrier of water above its head. its unblinking eyes stared impassively at the two, and frankly, jasmine found it kind of humorous. she nodded twice to show that she knew what fish he was talking about and anxiously awaited the next instructions.

"So now.." Cricket began, still watching the water. It felt a little strange in the silence with one other person with him- a person he had just met. And he was a little nervous, too, because he wasn't entirely sure his technique would even work. But hey- if he could catch a fish, it wouldn't be that hard for Jasmine to.
"Now you just wait until it gets close enough, and then you.." He said, gripping the handle of his knife and pulling it closer. The fish lingered closer and closer, until you could reach your hand out and touch its face. In the next second, he had his knife embedded in the sand of the water, and the fish was skewered onto the blade. It all happened so fast, you could blink and miss the action.
"Yeah- you just gotta be quick." He took his knife out of the water, removed the fish, and holded the weapon out for Jasmine to take.

"so, now..." cricket had begun, but jasmine chose to stay silent. she sat there, eyes fixated on the fish as its were on her. it was a bit like a staring contest, and it had been pretty intense, but now, her eyes were itching to blink. but she couldn't take her eyes off of the thing. suddenly, cricket's knife blade descended from out of nowhere (okay, so it obviously came from cricket, but it was seemingly out of nowhere if you weren't paying attention to him as jamine was) and slid smoothly through the fish's shiny skin. jasmine's breath caught as he pulled it out from the river, its scales glistening with pale blood and water. he removed the knife gently from the creature and handed it over to her. tentatively but determinedly, jasmine grasped the handle in her hand. it was still warm from where cricket had been holding it; still bloody around the top from the fish. she slid it through the mud a couple of times to clean it off.
jasmine slowly flipped the knife over in her hands, studying it--the metal of it was shiny and bright, and she could see a warped reflection of herself at the top. but now was not the time for that, she reminded herself, and she looked out into the water, searching for a good prey target. it seemed like that the one cricket had caught was the only immobile one, though, for the others were swimming back and forth like there was no tomorrow. she let out a breath in exasperation and squinted. there had to be one somewhere.
finally, she found it--a trout, her little brother's namesake, drifting all alone a few feet away. jasmine considered getting up and trying not to make any noise so as to not waste time, but she had to know that these things took patience. she bit her lip to keep from sighing again. she was not a patient person in the slightest. after a few moments of waiting, though, the current of the creek carried the trout over to her, and as soon as it was within reach, she jabbed the knife into the clear water. the satisfying texture of the blade meeting fish scales flood pleasure throughout her body, and she quickly pulled it in. she didn't remove the knife right away--instead, she flipped it over, still attached to the blade, studying each and every scale. my first kill, she thought with pride. her first instinct was to go home and show evergreen, but no. jasmine slowly slid the knife from the fish. there was plenty of fish and the creek, waiting to be hunted--this one first kill was hers.

Cricket watched intently as Jasmine tried to fish for the first time. It was amusing seeing a beginner and how concentrated they were because of how exciting it was. He remembered how he was the same way, only more hyper and not as lucky as Jasmine was with getting a kill on her first try.
Cricket ran his fingers over the wound on his fish. His knife had gone straight through the little guy- the fish didn't even have time to react. 'Hey, I was pretty fast.' He thought, smiling to himself.
And when Jasmine pulled her fish out of the water, he flashed her a huge grin. "Way to go Flower- you're a natural!"

"that's not my name, but..." jasmine trailed off, noticing cricket's grin. it made her grin. "thank you," she said brightly. "i don't mean to brag, but my dad's a pretty good hunter. maybe it's genetic or instinctive, because other than this, i can't be coordinated to save my life." she held up the fish she had caught by its tail. its wound had stopped bleeding, but the lifeless look in its eyes made jasmine shudder. still, she kept her composure. "sorry about that, little fella." she smiled at it before finding a large leaf to wrap it in.
jasmine hesitated a moment, trying to find another word to say. she reclined out of her fishing position, stretching her legs and propping herself up with her palms. "but how about you, huh? you were good, too."
she smiled. "it's funny. when i first saw you, i didn't think you'd be someone who could hunt. which isn't bad or anything," jasmine added quickly, realizing her potential faux pas. there she was again, always saying the weirdest things. perhaps that could never be outgrown, no matter who she was proving herself to. she sighed in contentment. maybe that didn't really matter at this point. she reached over and protectively slid her wrapped-up fish closer to her. --- lyrics - SAVE YOUR BREATH, JARIKA ?! of caution; picture - pretty. odd of caution; words - 214; muse - fair; now playing - nothing; outfit - this.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

Cricket leaned back and stretched out his legs. He didn't bother wrapping his fish up like Jasmine had done; he would probably put it down somewhere on the way home and then forget about it and walk away anyway.
He smirked when Jasmine complemented him. "Yeah I was pretty awesome, too. And don't forget that I was the one to teach you all this." He teased. He had to admit he was a pretty good hunter when he could concentrate, but he had to thank his cousins for that. Their whole family was made up of good hunters, so it was no surprise to anybody he knew.
"So, you're half-Chroni? That's cool. I've only met one other species- some Ohma girl a long time ago. But she didn't talk much and I don't think she liked me."

jasmine laughed at his teasing, her brown eyes rolling back. "well, then, thank you," she started, "but when i get better than you, just remember, that's all me." there was a moment of silence and for once, she appreciated it--just let the silence soak up the world around them, the river, the fish, the trees, romula... everything. she hadn't felt this free in a while. perhaps it was the adrenaline from actually hunting getting to her. she wondered what evergreen would think about it. would he be proud that she had caught her first fish without the help of him, oak, or primrose? or would he be upset with her that she had defied his restriction? she shook her head. knowing evergreen, it would probably be the latter. but he'd have to know sometime. she couldn't hide this from him forever. or could she? was the day that he was planning to teach her the basics of hunting coming soon? maybe not, she reasoned. and if it was, he should have told her before all this came into play. but she was getting too far ahead of herself. these were all "maybe"s and "what if"s, of course. she had a habit of doing this--over-analyzing situations, over-thinking... she wasn't sure where it came from, because it didn't seem like evergreen nor rose possessed this habit. maybe it was just a trait she developed on her own. she wished it would go away, because it caused much more anxiety for her than necessary, but she had been like this ever since she was born, so it didn't seem like change was a possibility.
jasmine looked up when it seemed like he was beginning conversation once more. she wrinkled her nose at the sound of the word ohma. "yeah, i've never really understood the whole solitude getup," she admitted, "but that's just the way they are, i suppose." truth be told, jasmine did understand some of it--she enjoyed her peace as much as the next person--but not all the time. you needed the company of other people, didn't you? well, i guess i'll never fully grasp the concept as long as i'm not an ohma, she thought.

Cricket gazed up towards the sky, spotting a few dark clouds that were approaching. They were far away, though for him it was fairly easy to see them. It meant that it would rain that night, so he couldn't sleep out in the woods tonight. Not that he would want to, but on days as nice as that day it would have been a relief to escape his house in the city.
The city. He could already imagine walking down its dark alleyways, being careful not to run into the wrong person at the wrong time. And being able to hear everything around him.. like the scurrying of a dirty rat or some Ina hunting another person. It almost made Cricket wish he was deaf. But nobody else in his family complained about all those noises. Maybe they were just used to it. Everybody was older than him in his household, so they had more experience in the city too.
"Yeah, Ohma aren't that fun to be around. I've never met one, but I hear Tarr are fun to hang out with. Of course, they would probably expect you to go swimming with them or something."
He realized how stupid he must have sounded and started laughing, but he wasn't sure if Jasmine would think his remark was funny.

jasmine watched as cricket craned his neck up towards the sky, and she followed his gaze curiously. several dark gray clouds had started rolling in, and she smiled faintly. she liked the rain, the cozy feeling it brought, the sound of raindrops hitting against her family's old-fashioned mediterranean mcmansion... just everything about the rain, jasmine adored. it was her favorite weather. sure, she enjoyed sunshine, but there was something about the rain that pleased her so much. her family enjoyed the rain, though rose and trout liked to enjoy it from the inside rather from the outside like jasmine, evergreen, oak, and primrose. in fact, evergreen encouraged hunting during rainstorms. whether it helped the hunting along or if he just enjoyed being outside during rainstorms, or maybe even a mixture of the two, jasmine never knew. because he never invited me along, she thought bitterly. but she brushed this off, because in time, he would. this she was sure of. he couldn't keep her "protected" forever. sooner or later, she would be on her own, like oak and primrose. until then, though...
jasmine looked over at cricket, who had just made a crack about the tarr. he was laughing at this, and his laugh made jasmine laugh. "i've never met either," she murmured thoughtfully. "personally, anyways. i've ran into a few, but i never stopped to talk to them." jasmine wasn't that kind of person. she had friends who could boldly go up to strangers and bother them to no avail, but she was the kind of person who couldn't stand even asking someone for the time in case that bothered them. it was a bad thing, she knew, especially if she wanted to learn how to get by on her own. there really was no such thing as getting by on your own, though--jasmine thought so, anyways. you're going to need the helping hand of someone else sooner or later. she didn't know why she was so concerned about this, of course--her parents were still around. she had a roof over her head, a place to sleep, food to eat... but jasmine had always been a paranoid person, and thus, forever preparing for the worst. although, maybe it was all this preparing for the worst that she couldn't enjoy what was at its best.

Cricket smiled to himself, remembering all the times he stopped to talk to random strangers. He didn't do that many times now, but lately he had been spending more time in the forests than the city. To him, the city was like one big blob of boring in the middle of the planet.
The forest was definitely the place to be. With so many sights and sounds- so many things to take in- it was so easy for him to just close his eyes and relax. Or take a nap. Yeah. One of those.
"I wanna go to the higher part of Sonica." He suddenly said, bringing up a whole different topic. "Like, soon. I want to see what's so great about it there."

cricket brought up the subject of visiting higher sonica, and at this, she laughed good-naturedly. "i just wanna get out of romula," she murmured, her high voice carrying through the peaceful atmosphere. she had always had such a baby voice, but at times, her voice could go down to a slight monotone. of course, it depended on her mood. a lot of things depended on her mood, such as what clothes she wanted to wear for that day, the music she chose to play from her music box... these things changed frequently, as her mood fluctuated severely every so often. it didn't take much to faze jasmine, and she wished that that wasn't the case. she wished she could be an independent, level-headed girl--and evidently, that's how she appeared to most people. but on the inside? she was something short of a train wreck. as of late, though, she'd been trying to calm down--it'd do her good to mellow out. as of late, she had been thinking it was working--sure, she still had her moods, but she tried to space them out--but she couldn't really tell. she wondered what she looked like to people who saw her. all she knew was that she didn't like what she saw when she saw her reflection. there were days when she could tolerate herself, but other days, she couldn't stand even the sound of her name.
jasmine forced herself from her thoughts before she got sucked in too deep and put on a smile for cricket. "soon, huh? how do you propose getting there?" she herself didn't know if she wanted to go to higher sonica. if the opportunity arose, then sure, she'd go see it, see if it really is as beautiful as people say, but right now, just going into the woods was a greater desire than that. her dreams were small, but they were big to her, and she was determined to get them accomplished. of course, it was rare that she ever knew how to accomplish them. all she knew was that she couldn't sit around and mope, wondering how things could be if she just did this. she knew she had to do that and see what would happen herself--because, after all, you never know until you try--but the irony of it all was, she was too cautious. she had all these fantasies about leaving romula, but just like evergreen, she was worried about what would happen once her safety net was removed. she let out a breath. why couldn't she just want one thing and stick to it?

Cricket shrugged and ran his fingers along the scales of his fish, which was still in his hands. "Dunno; I guess I would walk. It isn't that far from my home, and I walked all the way here so it wouldn't be any worse."
"So you live here- in Romula- right? It's nice here; maybe we should trade places. I could live in Romula and you could go explore Sonica."
He grinned again, staring at Jasmine with his bright blue eyes. She was an interesting person, and Cricket was glad to have met her. She was probably thinking the same thing, only replacing 'interesting' with 'very strange'.
