"I can't see anything."
"You don't need to right now. Just wait."
"But what if I- OH MY GOD!"
"What?!"
"SOMETHING CRAWLED OVER MY FOOT."
"SHUT UP. God, Cricket you're going to wake the whole neighborhood."
Bay reached out in the darkness to grab Cricket's shoulder. Cricket jumped in response, but then he realized who it was and calmed down. "I hate bugs. What if that was a bug?" He whispered. Bay smirked and said, "It probably was."
"Oh my God, Bay. How much longer do we have to walk?" Cricket said, holding onto Bay's hand. Bay pressed his free hand against a wall and slid open a hidden door. The hallway the two of them were standing in flooded with light. "We're here. You can let go of my hand now."
---------
Lit by dozens of candles mounted to the walls, the secret passageways of Paul's Bakery created an endless maze for people to get lost in. But luckily, Bay knew his way around. He had practically lived there for a long time, so he had to maneuver through the hallways everyday.
Cricket followed him until they reached a dead end in the tunnels, and Bay stopped by push another secret door aside and continue on. The silence between them was getting to be too much for Cricket, so he started whistling.
Bay stopped walking and turned to face him. He frowned. "What are you doing?" he demanded.
Cricket grinned. "I'm whistling!"
"Well.. stop. We made it the meeting room. Rowan's not here yet, so you have to wait a while to meet him. But yeah- you're a Believer now."
"So what do I do now?" Cricket asked. The thought of being down in the tunnels all day made him shiver. It was hard for him to breathe when he was enclosed in a small area for that long. Hopefully it would be easy for him to find his way upstairs again.
"We should go inside and I can let you in on what's going on right now. Ya know: news." Bay walked inside of the new room. This one was quite larger, with a chalkboard on one wall, a large wooden table in the middle, and a few chairs against the walls. He motioned for Cricket to take a seat while he went to sit in one corner of the room. Immediately, Cricket followed him and sat in the seat directly next to Bay.
-------
"So as you can see, this Corvus guy needs to go. Actually, all the Natives need to go." Bay said, folding his hands on his lap. He pretty much explained the entire story of the Believers and what they were doing and why they couldn't progress any further with their plans, so he had to stop and take a breath. "Any questions?"
"Yeah; why can't we just ask the Natives to go home? If they don't like us that much maybe they would be glad send us back." Cricket asked, rubbing his head. There was a lot of stuff to learn in a short amount of time- he didn't like having to wrap his brain around all of it at once.
"We tried that. The last leader tried it. And.. they killed him."
"Who was it?"
"What? Oh, the leader?"
"Yeah."
Bay looked at the ground, feeling his throat tighten up at the thought of the former leader's death. It was years ago, but it still made him upset more than anybody else who was there to witness it. "He was.. my dad."
And suddenly Cricket had his arms wrapped around Bay, even though that would probably make things really awkward. It just felt like the right thing to do at that very moment. "Cricket.. what the hell are you doing." Bay said, sitting completely still.
"I'm hugging you!"
So the two of them sat there for a while; Bay consumed in thoughts of his dad and Cricket just waiting for Bay to tell him to stop.
